Step 5 – A MAGA-Destroying Idea

Imagine you’re a Democratic Congressman running for reelection in 2026 against a well-funded MAGA GOP opponent. The MAGA lowlife is using every well-worn MAGA dirty trick: lying, insulting and attacking you, distracting voters with racist illegal immigrant bluster or anti-trans bigotry, false claims of cheating and so on.

How do you fight back against the onslaught? You do not have unlimited funds nor access to massive amounts of social media post data like Elon Musk has which he uses to micro target his false narrative.

But… what if you did? What if your staff could go to a website, enter an idea for a campaign ad or TikTok video and a short time later you have a finished product in hand?

What if you could post the new video across all your official social media channels with a single click? What if you could leverage an army of influencers, supporters and bots to amplify and spread your video?

What if you could get detailed, data-driven feedback on the response to your posts and videos to rapidly and efficiently learn which ones are “hitting” and which ones are not so that you can double-down on your successes and not waste more time or money on the misses?

Musk and his MAGA billionaire buddies can do that on their own because they have unlimited funds and full access to X’s (Twitter’s) massive data, but by working together progressives could achieve similar results.

Imagine if all our progressive candidates pooled their resources and created an agnostic, independent support organization whose sole purpose was to promote and secure American Democracy? Not the DNC with all all its politicking and entrenched old guard fending off more liberal new blood. Not a single candidate’s or caucus’s Super PAC that has a specific agenda to promote their own candidate or view to the exclusion of everyone and everything else.

What we need is an organization that supports all progressives who believe that people, not billionaires are what matter in this country. Run by people who believe that fighting for what’s right is more important than fighting for money or power or influence. It would be agnostic in the sense that the specific messaging or candidate is not as important as fighting against tyranny and being effective. We would have an agenda, but it’s an agenda of…doing what’s right for all Americans.

What Is an Independent Progressive Support Organization

Many Democrats, both elected and private are struggling to figure out an effective way to fight back against Trump and his Deep Money State machine. Some, like Senate Minority Leader (for now) Chuck Schumer and Brad Karp, chairman of law firm Paul, Weiss which is (was) one of the leading Democratic firms fighting Trump’s unconstitutional actions, have chosen capitulation.

Others, like Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and more recently Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and California Governor Gavin Newsom are fighting back with bold speeches, lawsuits and huge rallies that fire up the Trump regime’s opponents. They are birthing a dissident movement that Jonathan V. Last at The Bulwark astutely points out is critical to defeating Trump.

It should be obvious that appeasing a tyrant will not soften the tyrant or get you any leverage that you can use to block him or slow him down. Schumer had a glorious chance to block the draconian cuts the Republicans included in the Continuing Resolution that funded the government through September and what did Vichy Chuck do? Nothing. He did not even try to use the threat of a filibuster which is one of the few forms of leverage still at the Democrats’ disposal. And then in May, the Republicans advanced their “big beautiful bill” which cuts $880 million dollars from Medicaid so that billionaires like Musk and Bezos can pay even less in taxes.

Is that what Democratic voters want? For our elected officials to just… give up? Maybe if Schumer had put up a fight and killed this thing in March, the GOP would have been forced to back off, but now they’re on the bring of inflicting massive pain and suffering on millions of poor people, including their own voters.

So clearly, the answer is no, Democratic voters do not want more of the status quo. Progressives, moderates and everyone else who has not drunk the Trump Cult Kool-Aid are desperately yearning for leaders with the courage to stand up and fight back.

This is not conjecture, it is empirically proven fact:

Recently I posted a selfie video to Substack Notes that Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) had posted on X in which he said that he was going to sell his Tesla because “it kind of turns out Elon Musk is an asshole.” My Note took off and the last time I checked, it had gotten almost 30,000 Likes and been restacked almost 2400 times.

Meanwhile Sen. Kelly’s original post on X has over 10 million views which is rare for a non-Musk, fake-boosted propaganda post.

Why was Kelly’s post so popular? Because people are desperate for their elected officials to stand up to the bullies. To stand up for America. Sen. Kelly used plain language and voiced what we are all thinking: Yeah, Elon Musk actually is an asshole. It was a rhetorical punch to the bully’s face and it was highly satisfying to millions of people.

Sen. Kelly’s viral post is not the kind of thing you can plan or predict from the top-down ahead of time. It happened organically and naturally. It might be easy to disregard because Kelly has almost a half million followers on X and it stands to reason that his posts will be seen by a lot of people. But that does not explain my cross-post on Substack.

I had only 185 subscribers when I made my post. As you can see in the image above, I gained at least 577 new subs from this one post. That is huge for my little publication and it’s a testament to how powerful Sen. Kelly’s message is.

Clearly, we want this kind of progressive content to go viral every day because it penetrates the obstacles thrown up by the MAGA billionaires who control today’s version of the airwaves. But there are two challenges:

1. How to create content that can go viral

2. How to get our content seen

I talked about some methods to get our content seen in Step 4 of this series, Build and leverage a left-wing media ecosystem. Just like Sen. Kelly, our posts and videos can be seen by millions of voters with the right content, which is where my support organization comes into play.

How do you make viral content? Anyone who claims they can do it at will (or for a fee) is lying or scamming you. It almost always happens spontaneously or organically.

We do not have control of the social media where people like Elon Musk can force MAGA messages down everyone’s throats, so what we really need to do is to recognize and harness organically created content that has potential, no matter where it comes from, and then help it go viral with tools, with data, and with an amplification network that rivals MAGA’s. There actually are more of us than them; they are just louder and noisier and have Musk and Zuckerberg and other billionaires boosting their noise.

Even better, we can expand this support concept beyond content and messaging. My vision in Step 5 is to create an innovative organization unlike any that has ever existed before. An organization that is not tied to a specific candidate or a particular wing or caucus of the Democratic Party or even the Party itself. An organization that supports everyone across the leftwing spectrum whether we agree on every issue or not.

At its core, this organization would have three main objectives:

1. Support fast content creation with no judgement. Be unbiased or agnostic because we don’t know what will resonate with Americans. Throw messaging spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks.

2. Be a conduit for mass dissemination.

3. Collect, analyze (with the help of AI) and share data to see what is working and what is not, much like A/B tests in marketing except at massive scale with thousands of posts and videos.

Progressives don’t all need to be in lockstep with everyone saying the same exact words that the DNC puts out. That is what the entrenched Democratic collaborators keep trying to do.

We do not need talking points distributed weekly devised by consultants based on polling data they’re selling.

We do need attacks, and as many as possible. Whatever is hitting, whatever sticks, we amply those, so as many people as possible see them.

It needs to be relentless and overwhelming. It is shock and awe messaging which is too much for any one politician or group to do so we need to come together and fund an organization that supports all progressive fighters.

In short, what we need is a Fast Action War Room with a few key capabilities:

• Per-channel experts at social media

• Rapid, inexpensive video creation (outsource and/or use AI)

• Utilize AI on social media data to find out what works, what is hitting or going viral and then rocket those hard. You can bet Musk is using AI on his massive X posting dataset. We cannot replicate that, but we can scoop up a lot of data and we can leverage Bluesky which is more open.

• Leverage bots. Elon Musk, the Russians and the Chinese and the MAGAs do it and so will we.

• Be centralized, but with individualized management and functionality, like a clearinghouse and a service with expertise but we let the pols and other participants drive their own message.

War Room Org

I have the organization mapped out and I’m ready to go but I need two things: volunteers and funds. The latter will not come without the former. We need to start building this quickly so we are ready for the 2026 midterms. People will start to donate once they see how effective we are at helping progressive candidates win.

Without bogging down this article with the gritty details, here are the main organizational functions or groups that we need to staff:

• Social Media Operations for hands-on and automated posting and amplification through cooperative influencers (one or more per platform)

• Systems Group

  • Data collection (massive undertaking involving social media, video, newscasts, news sites, government sites, transcripts of speeches, town halls, legislative committee meetings, floor speeches, and so on)

  • Social media AI

  • Legal case tracking

  • Tools (internal and external)

  • Bot development and deployment

• Messaging (leverages Systems Group’s AI, communicate what’s working and what’s not)

• Creative (works closely with Messaging)

  • Writers (organic posts, reaction posts, point-of-view, op-eds, attacks, and so on)

  • Video

  • Music

  • Memes

  • Long-form content, opinion pieces and articles

  • Positive content

  • Negative content

• Reporting

  • Investigative

  • Current Events

  • Opponents

• Legislative (expertise in rules of order, tracking every committee, every vote, vote whipping, provide legislators with options to slow/block bills, decisions, filing complaints, liaison to every friendly legislator).

• Legal (a team of paid and volunteer lawyers (similar to Democracy Docket which focuses on voting rights) to file massive numbers of lawsuits, over EVERY bad thing MAGA is doing at the federal, state and local levels). Clog up the MAGA system.

• Research (Subject Matter Experts in different areas, supports data collection by Systems Group and provides analyses for Messaging, Creative, etc.)

  • Finds and feeds data to Systems Group’s AI dataset(s)

  • Government databases

  • FOIA requests (bombard them, follow up, use Legal to file suits)

  • Commercial datasets

  • News, articles, video data → AI LLMs

• Opposition Research

  • Public

  • Undercover (can feed to Creative)

• Fund Raising

• Administration and Management

• Coordination (strategy and communication)

Ultimately, this will cost millions of dollars which is why we have to get thousands of progressives to band together behind the concept. Both rich and grass-roots, everyone has a part to play in saving American Democracy. We can build a wall to obstruct the enemy, and then push back and ultimately destroy the MAGA cancer. Their victory is not a foregone conclusion.

Why GOP Jesus and What Next?

This is a big idea from someone (me) who is a nobody. I have never worked in politics, never run for office. I am not a social media influencer with a huge following to leverage; I have fewer than 20k followers on X and half that on Bluesky. I am not rich (quite the opposite actually; I know firsthand how Medicaid is a lifesaver) and I do not have a Rolodex full of wealthy or powerful contacts.

I am however intelligent and organized. I’m not young which means I have experienced a lot of life. I have children who deserve the same opportunities that I had growing up in the last century.

Clearly, my odds of success with this idea are slim to none. I get that. But many great things in history started with a simple idea and if you do not put it out there, then you might as well let Trump and Musk and all the rest of the oligarchs take whatever they want from us.

I will start building a list of volunteers which is how we will have to start (with no money). Once we have a few people, we can create a way to communicate (Signal anyone?) and coordinate and plan the next steps.
